Calvin Brown letters to James Tyler Ames, 1863 Jan-Jun.

Two ALS written by Calvin Brown, Mare Island Navy Yard, California, to James Tyler Ames, Chicopee, Massachusetts. Brown describes his work in constructing and equipping Navy Yard facilities and refers to machinery purchased from Ames. He also discusses business prospects in California and Nevada and advises Ames to visit and pursue opportunities in California mining and industry. He briefly discusses problems of the low value of paper money in California and the effects of Confederate naval operations on shipping of merchandise from the East Coast. The letters are accompanied by a clipping from an unidentified newspaper concerning mining in Grass Valley, California, undated.
